On Power and Privilege
As your therapist, counselor, or clinical supervisor, my goal is to serve and support you. That means that if at any point you feel that I am not treating you with the respect and empathy that I would provide to anyone else I’m working with, I would value that feedback and strive to improve. As uncomfortable as that conversation might be (and it might not), it’s a small price to pay compared to the benefits I’ve received from unearned privilege. I’m still growing as a person, as a therapist, and as a supervisor, but I value serving others who have lived different experiences from me, and I can only do that effectively if I’m striving towards cultural humility at all times.
